Active Oxygen in Plants

چکیده

Plant cells produce active oxygen during interactions with potential pathogens. Active oxygen species, including superoxide, hydrogen peroxide, and the hydroxyl radical, could potentially affect many cellular processes involved in plant/pathogen interactions. Active oxygen can be difficult to monitor in plant cells because many of the species are short-lived and are subject to cellular antioxidant mechanisms such as superoxide dismutases, peroxidases, the ascorbate/glutathione cycle, and catalase. Modifications of the luminol-dependent chemiluminescence assay have facilitated studies on both the production and scavenging of active oxygen that occurs during incompatible plant/bacteria interactions. Many potential sources for active oxygen production have been identified such as NADPH oxidases and peroxidases, but it is still unclear which mechanisms predominate during plant/ pathogen interactions. The active oxygen produced in response to pathogens and elicitors has been hypothesized to have direct antimicrobial effects and to playa role in other defense mechanisms including lignin production, lipid peroxidation, phytoalexin production, and the hypersensitive response.

Disease resistance conferred by expression of a gene encoding H2O2-generating glucose oxidase in transgenic potato plants.

Plant defense responses to pathogen infection involve the production of active oxygen species, including hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). We obtained transgenic potato plants expressing a fungal gene encoding glucose oxidase, which generates H2O2 when glucose is oxidized. H2O2 levels were elevated in both leaf and tuber tissues of these plants. Transgenic potato tubers exhibited strong resistance to a...

The effect of phytochemical compounds on indicators of oxidative stress, inflammation and skeletal muscle damage caused by physical activity

Physical activities are associated with increased production of reactive oxygen species. The production of reactive oxygen species is dependent of the intensity, duration and type of activity. Although the physiological amounts of reactive oxygen species are necessary to regulate cell reactions, their excessive production can cause numerous damages to the structure and function of cells and wea...

Antioxidant screening of some medicinal plants of Iran

One of the most reactive and dangerous agents for the living cells is reactive oxygen free radical species (ROS). When there is an imbalance between ROS generating and scavenging systems (oxidative stress), tissue damages will appear in human body such as degenerative disorders of CNS like Alzheimer's disease. Recently, a high interest in medicinal plants containing antioxidants has been increa...

Time-dependent Effects of High Intensity Interval Training on Oxygen Kinetics in Females

Background. Because VO2max doesn’t provide any detailed information about aerobic examinations Oxygen Kinetic is used for more accuracy. Long intensive and repetitive exercises with sufficient time lead to increase in aerobic parameters like kinetic absorption of oxygen. Objectives. The purpose of this study was to determine time dependent effects of short-time high intensity interval...

A recessive Arabidopsis mutant that grows photoautotrophically under salt stress shows enhanced active oxygen detoxification.

Mutagenized Arabidopsis seedlings (ecotype Columbia) were screened for the ability to grow photoautotrophically on solid medium containing 200 mM NaCl. A novel mutant line, designated pst1 (for photoautotrophic salt tolerance1), was obtained. There were no significant differences between pst1 and wild-type plants with regard to their ability to induce proline as an osmoregulatory solute. In add...
